Welcome to the web home of Legio XI CPF PDF Print

Legio XI is a Georgia-based Roman reenactment group, dedicated to recreating the environment, equipment, technology, and ethos of the Roman Army of the 1st Century A.D.

As such, all of us share an avid interest in the history and authenticity of our subject, and strive our best to present an accurate portrayal of Roman Legionaries and Auxiliaries in a variety of settings.

Legio XI conducts regular monthly workshops where we exchange ideas, make our own equipment, learn more about our respective interests, and enjoy each others' company. We participate in reenactment events, locally and across the U.S., that recreate Roman camp and military life.

We provide demonstrations for schools and other institutions interested in well-researched, accurate, and interesting living history. We are able to tailor our presentations for any audience.

Good workshop this month. Alex Kyrychenko, Alex Matras, Brad Addona, Chris Damour and I all got together at my house and had the usual good time. Alex M. and Brad went all-out and finished two more clipei, making them ready for paint as soon as Jennifer’s health allows her to complete them. This is good news for Jesse Bailey and John McKinnell, as they both lack scuta for their auxiliary infantry impressions. In addition, we all collectively worked on the loaner kit, replacing and dying the leather on the scabbards of both the SOTW and FIA gladii for the loaner kits. We dyed the FIA scabbard green (it had been painted green previously) and the SOTW scabbard a nice, deep red. This was very easy to do, and I plan to do the same for the FIA fulham gladius as well as the SOTW pugio. In terms of completing scuta, here’s where we are: we have three in for paint (Alex K’s parma for his signifer impression; Alex M. and Brad’s legionary scuta (the rims are already done for these); four shields are ready for paint: Jesse Bailey’s and John McKinnell’s auxiliary clipei and legionary scuta for Paul Montello and Brian Lauthen. Andrew Magee’s legionary scutum just needs linen and leather to ready it to go to Jennifer. Be patient, fellows – Jennifer will get to these as soon as she is able. Next month I’d like to continue to upgrade the loaner kit by working on some details on gladii, pugiones, etc. .

Great event this past weekend; I really appreciate everyone's efforts to attend and put on such a great presentation for the students and other attendees.

ALL of the event organizers were incredibly pleased with our participation, and told me countless times how much they appreciated what we did for them. They reiterated that we are welcome to come to
Rock Eagle for as many years as they host the event.

Alex Kyrychenko recently added some copper leafing to his already incredible legionary scutum umbo. If you recall, awhile back he added a punch-work design to it that was based on an historical find, and therefore it was already the nicest umbo in the legio. In this project, he added copper leaf to the design to really make the images he punched into the steel really stand out. Pics are posted on the Legio XI Yahoo website, and if you have not taken a look at them yet then you should really take a minute and do so. Alex Matras also completed a really neat set of 2nd Century A.D. ocrae (greaves). He hand hammered and formed them from sheet brass, and they are amazing. I am constantly impressed with what you guys in the legio are able to learn to do on your own. Finally, with the end of the school year, Andrew Magee is taking a summer sabbatical from the legio to go home and work. We’ll see him back in uniform sometime in September, hopefully he can make it to Charlotte with us. We also have some potential new members. Ms Vicky Alvear Schecter is an author of books on ancient history for children, her pet peeve being inaccurate information in the books on this topic available on the market. She’s also expressed an interest in joining the legion as a civilian auxiliary, and we welcome her to do so. Check out her work on her website at http://www.vickyalvearshecter.com. Another potential member is Ms Devon Stewart, a graduate student at Emory studying Roman Art, and is also interested in joining as a civilian auxiliary. I hope that we see the both of them soon at an event or workshop. I am hoping that Devon can paint!

Legion XI CPF just returned from Lafe Arkansas in support of Legio II at the AD 43 event.

Well, what can I say except that in SPITE of the truly authentic, wet, “British” weather, Lafe 2008 was a blast!

The four of us (I, Alex K, Brad, and Alex M) arrived on Thursday afternoon, and the weather was “iffy,” in that it was cool and overcast – definitely looked like rain. Friday was intermittently wet, and it got worse by Saturday. Sunday was a constant deluge.
